| Metta Forest Monastery grew from an aspiration expressed by Phra Ajaan Suwat Suvaco (Phra Bodhidhammacariya Thera) that America should have an international forest monastery in a tranquil setting devoted to the practice of the Buddha's Dhamma and Vinaya, in the style of the Thai forest tradition of Phra Ajaan Mun Bhuridatta Thera (1870-1949).
This monastery is located in an avocado orchard on a hill surrounded by the mountains and chaparral of northern San Diego County, California.
In 1993, Ajaan Suwat appointed Ajaan Geoffrey Thanissaro to be abbot of the monastery. |

It's located on 150 acres of eucalyptus forest, cliffs, waterfalls, and caves adjoining Morton National Park in the rugged landscape of Australia's Southern Highlands, about halfway between Sydney and Canberra. It was established by Bhante Sujato, with his teacher Ajahn Brahm, the abbot of Bodhinyana Buddhist Monastery in Western Australia, as its Spiritual Director. Santi Forest Monastery is owned by Citta Bhavana Incorporated, a not-for-profit charitable association. |

The first few years he trained in a monastery (Wat Pah Nanachat) that was established by Ajahn Chah for non-Thais.
